Racing at DCYC

When you enter the Deep Cove Yacht Club clubhouse you notice that the display cases are filled with trophies. These trophies represent the long tradition of sailboat racing at DCYC. Over the years, our club has produced many top notch sailors. Even though some of the faces have changed, the rich racing/sailing tradition at DCYC continues on to this day. "Any Sunday" you will see the docks spilling over with crews getting the boats ready to race. You'll find keelboat racing series, dingy sailing for juniors , and major events such as the VARC Martin Marine Deep Cove Regatta that DCYC will be hosting again this year in September. We have events to attract the serious sailboat racers and for the more casual sailors we have the Deep Cove Rally which will be held in June. Most of our club racers are always looking for crew, which makes this an activity for all members to enjoy. So if you are looking to join in the fun, come on down to the docks...we promise no one will be left behind!

Sailboat racing truly encompasses the great heritage and community spirit of DCYC. We welcome participation from the community and other clubs such as the Centennial Sailing Club. Members and non-members have made our racing program a huge success. To find out more about our sailboat racing program, please feel free to contact Fleet Captain Tony Gill at or check out the notices in the racing section of the bulletin board downstairs at the clubhouse.

This years racing schedule promises to deliver another action-packed season...we hope to see you down on the docks.

It has been a strange start to this series of races this season.  Either we go out there (five or six boats) and find no wind, or nobody (sic) shows up. Crew is always a challenge for keel boat skippers, so much so in my case that I appointed a Crew Chief to take on getting crew each week.  My first Chief was Kate Bellon, the secretary at my chiropractor's office, who put together a crew for my boat Avanti while she was getting crews, 12 at a time, for dragon boat racing.

Her successor is Peter Mueller, who has been in his post now for several years.  This next race will see me on shore hosting a family reunion, something that we try to do once per year.  I have asked Rob Burton to take my place on the boat, so we should have 4-5 crew on Avanti.

Last week, Malcolm Chaddock was in Mexico, and Rob Smith had crew on sick leave.  Mardy Grossman was recovering from Southern Straits and only Tom Gardner showed up.  So Avanti went out with a new crew member and did some crew drills.  Actually got a bit of breeze and Avanti had a bone in her teeth for about 30 minutes, so all was not lost.

I will rely on Peter to report this coming race.

2016

Another great VARC Martin Marine Regatta September 10 and 11 for DCYC. We had 27 boats register and compete over 2 days at the Cove. Weather and wind played their part and a good time was had by all. Many thanks to all the volunteers from the club who contributed to make this event a success.

Thanks to the food and bar team, the BBQ went down really well. Our main Sponsors for the event were Martin Marine: $1000 and great prizes - Steamworks: supplied free Keg and prizes - Polar: contributed great prizes - Lynwood marina who supplied a great prize of a lift. Navis insurance who supplied the race officer James McDonald Nesters Market who supplied food over 2 days for the committee boat We Also had support from the local Deep Cove retail community who contributed through vouchers for free coffee and discounts off menu items for the sailors.

Please view the Youtube video done by Brent Lapham, Deep Cove is paradise, thank you Brent.

Once again thanks to all the volunteers and Rob Leblond for the service of his boat.

We look forward to making this event even better next year.
